Sickle Cell Foundation of Georgia (SCFG), a statewide nonprofit, was co-founded in 1971 by Dr. Delutha King and the late Dr. Nelson McGhee, Jr. Both were concerned about the high incidence of Black infant mortality. In time, sickle cell disease (SCD), a genetic blood disorder was identified and a protocol to protect newborns was established. The organization educated the public about SCD and sickle cell trait. SCFG also advocated for and helped establish Georgia’s Newborn Screening program which tests all Georgia newborns for abnormal hemoglobins. Recently, SCFG helped legalize medical cannabis for SCD patients in Georgia – a first nationwide.
